About Taylor:
Taylor Nelson was born in 1994 and raised in central Minnesota. He studied Drawing and Painting at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design 2013-2014 before graduating with a BFA in English at the University of Minnesota, Morris in 2017. Since 2016, he has devoted himself full-time to art. He currently lives and works in Mankato, Minnesota.
About his art:
Taylor works primarily in acrylic paints, though he has experience in oil, watercolor, ink, and graphite and will use these media when appropriate. What began as an affinity for drawing as a child grew into an obsession with painting after being introduced to the medium in high school. After learning the basics at MCAD, Taylor continued to paint even while studying other subjects. During this time, his artistic voice began to take shape as fused his initial, more traditional, influences such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh with the darker, psychedelic approaches of H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksinski.
Taylor’s approach to his art is intuitive and reactive. He usually begins sketches or paintings with broad ideas, colors, and gestures, and then reacts to the work as it takes shape to create the forms, motifs, and narratives in his pieces. This approach makes the painting process fun and exciting for both artist and viewer; Taylor enjoys the performative aspects of painting, and has been live painting at galleries, events, and music festivals since 2016.
